Children and Secondhand Smoke

Exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of asthma, respiratory illness, middle ear infections and tooth decay in children. Forty-three percent of children in this country are exposed to secondhand smoke in their own homes, according to the American Lung Association. Eighty-five percent of kids have cotinine in their blood. Cotinine is a byproduct of nicotine and shows that the child has been exposed to nicotine, the ALA says.
